BioTC Celebrates Completion of First Cohort, Strengthening Oklahoma’s Biotech Workforce
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OKLAHOMA CITY — BioTC, Oklahoma’s first biomanufacturing workforce training center, led by the Oklahoma City Innovation District, proudly celebrated the completion of its first cohort last week. In partnership with Wheeler Bio, this inaugural group of trainees successfully completed an intensive, five-day bootcamp-style program, gaining critical industry skills.
“This program is the future of medicine here in Oklahoma and if you keep pushing forward, it's going to be an amazing career for you.”
— Priscilla Aguilar, BioTC Cohort 1 Graduate
The program was tailored to address Wheeler Bio’s need for entry-level manufacturing associates to assist in producing a melanoma vaccine. BioTC partnered closely with Wheeler Bio to interview and select candidates for the cohort. Applicants submitted their forms through BioTC, and both organizations worked together to identify the ideal participants for the accelerated training program.
The new graduates received their certification and began full-time positions at Wheeler Bio the following Monday. Additionally, once the cohort meets Wheeler Bio’s current needs, there is potential to send them back for further training to enhance their skills.
“If I can do it, you can do it, honestly. I went from being a barista to a full career change.”
— Jayson Short, BioTC Cohort 1 Graduate
The program’s unique structure allowed trainees to gain hands-on experience with real lab equipment in a simulated environment — a crucial step in overcoming the industry’s typical barrier of expensive, hands-off training periods. BioTC’s ability to customize its curriculum for industry partners accelerates workforce readiness while saving employers time and resources. By fast-tracking skill development and providing direct equipment access, BioTC is helping fuel the growth of Oklahoma’s biotech workforce.
BioTC originally aimed to train 100 individuals in its first year, but construction delays shifted the target to 40–50 by year’s end. Despite the setback, the program continues building momentum to grow Oklahoma’s biotech workforce. Applicants need only a GED or high school diploma, and applications are open now at www.biotcoklahoma.com.
